Wondering which pet to buy?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Have you recently been thinking of buying a pet for the home? Well what is the best to have and why?

You need to consider the kids, they are vital to getting a pet. It is best not to get a pet if you have kids on the way as sometimes the animal can get jealous of the attention it has lost and the child has gained so if this is the case wait until your child has been born amd is perhaps a tad older.

A dog could be a very good choice for a family. If you are thinking of getting a dog then it would certainly be wise to get one of the bigger breeds like a Golden Retriever or German Shepherd as they are not only very friendly, family dogs they will also help to guard the home when you are out or asleep as their barks can ward of intruders. Be careful as in the case of a German Shepherd they are not very friendly towards anyone outside of the immediate family but get used to any guests you have so do not worry they are not as horrible as they sound or look in those police videos you see.

Of course if you are not a big family or do not like the big breeds of dog simply buy a smaller breed.

If you do not like dogs then maybe a cat is what you need. They are not really the best animal to have for families with young children as they are really only interested in themselves and have little time for playing.

There are hundreds of pets to choose from so if you do not like the suggestions so far how about something like a rabbit, hamster or even a goldfish would be better for you. They can be surprisingly good company to have.

Of course you do not want to forget the care that the pet will need once you have it. Join an animal hospital so that the animal surgery within it can help your pet if it has an accident or suffers from health problems. Some of these can even do pet’s cardiology which can even involve fitting a pacemaker into your pet.

Benefit your pet with a vet!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

So you’ve got a pet or are about to get a pet. How on earth are you going to help it if it falls ill or breaks a limb? Sometimes putting the poor pet down could be totally unnecessary simply because a vet could actually save its life and add years to its life. There are now so many new things that are available for pets that would have been laughed at twenty years ago if you had suggested doing them. Newer ways to operate on them have come into use ranging from the simple limb repair to the more skilled pets cardiology which believe it or not can even include fitting a pacemaker into your cat or dog which simply put just goes to show how far technology has come.

An animal surgery could help your pet on any of the 365 days of the year, as many have emergency clinics that you can pop into whenever you need to as well as, some having numbers that you can ring to talk to a specialist whenever you think something may be wrong with your pet, and these numbers will actually have a person who understands veterinary and can help as opposed to someone who has no idea what is wrong with your pet and is simply on the line to assure you that everything is ok.

If something bad happens to your loved pet and sadly it has to be put down they will not simply do it and ask for you to leave straight away. They understand that a pet is actually a member of the family so will allow you to stay on and say goodbye to your pet and help to arrange the right disposal for you.

There are some as well that offer blood transfusion so when something serious like a road traffic accident happens your pet will be able to gain back any lost blood.

So there are many ways that an animal hospital can actually benefit your pet so it is worth considering joining one now so if something bad does happen you have someone there to help.

A Kitten or a Cat How to Adopt a New Pet

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Whenever most people make the decision to adopt a new pet, they tend to gravitate toward the little ones.  These baby dogs and cats known as puppies and kittens put smiles on the faces of everyone.  Just remember that owning an adult cat has some advantages over the baby kitten.  How should you decide?  Here are some things to consider.

A new pet kitten is cute.  No one can deny this fact.  Kittens play, romp around, and pounce with an exaggerated cuteness that hardly anyone can resist.  However, a kitten may not be the best choice for your household.

If you adopt a new pet and choose a kitten, then you will need to be prepared for quite a bit of work.  The kitten will need to be litter box trained.  Training usually goes smoothly, but it does mean that you may have to deal with cat urine spraying.  Kittens will also need to be taught what they can play with and what is off-limits.

When you adopt this new kitten you will need to baby proof your home, making sure that it does not have easy access to electrical cords and other dangerous objects that felines will gravitate toward.

Adopting a new kitten

Kittens are filled with boundless energy, and this can be a reason to adopt one, but it could also be a reason to veer away. If you will have the time to spend with kitten, playing and petting, then certainly adopt the little fellow.

However a new pet kitten is not a good choice for people with small amounts of free time.  They need play time, and they definitely need human interaction to develop good social cat behavior.

When you adopt a new pet take the age of children in the home into consideration. If you have very small children then a kitten might not be right for your home. Kittens can be injured by small children that may not be capable of playing with them gently.

A grown cat can offer a bypass on much of the stress that comes along with raising and training a kitten.  Most adult cats are litter trained already so this will be one less thing to do when you move them into your home.

Even though an adult cat may not have the cute factor they are still affectionate and playful.  At the same time, a cat is not as dependent upon attention from their owner.  Cats enjoy their private time too.

Getting a full grown cat

One very large problem that can arise when adopting a grown cat is that you will not know its background.  Animals that have been neglected or abused may have behavioral issues that can pose difficult hurdles in your relationship. Usually, these problems can be overcome with some attention, patience, and reading some facts about cats.

When you adopt a new pet cat or a kitten, consider the animal’s personality and the amount of attention and training you will need to devote to your new pet.  There are definite advantages to either choice, but the ultimate decision will hinge on which will work best in your home environment.  Beware of the kittens weapons of mass cuteness and do not base your decision on cute.

Airline Approved Dog Carrier - Now You Can Take Your Pet With You While You Travel

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Traveling with your pet can be extremely difficult most of the time. This is especially true if you are traveling on a plane with your pup. One thing that you want to make sure before you even think about purchasing your tickets is getting an Airline Approved dog carriers. This will not only keep your dog extremely safe during the plane ride, but you will actually be able to get on the plane!

It might seem like a hassle to seek proper airline approval when purchasing a pet carrier. However, the whole reason for doing so is to make sure that neither you nor your dog get stressed out during your journey. A lot of people travel with their pets these days. Even still, a lot of airlines have put into place very strict restrictions concerning the type of carrier they will allow on board.

Failing to find out what your particular airline expects could potentially ruin your travel plans. Can you imagine having to turn around when you reach the airport, because you discover that either your pet is not allowed or that he or she does not have the proper kind of dogs travel? Not only do you risk completely missing your flight, but you are left without a contingency plan concerning the care of your dog while you are away.

The first thing you need to think about - and ask about - is the size of your dog. Bigger dogs typically need to be checked, so they will travel in the plane’s cargo area. Thus, you are going to want to make sure that you purchase a large carrier - you want your dog to be comfortable back there.

At the same time, however, you will need to check with the airline about size restrictions. You could show up with a carrier which is too big, only to be told that the airline will not accept it due to its size. Fortunately, all it takes is a call to the airport before you fly out. Make sure you call early enough ahead of time that you have the opportunity to exchange a carrier if you need to do so.

You may be able to carry your dog onto the plane with you, and keep him in the cabin. Small dogs are, of course, most ideal for this. You still need to make sure you find out what kinds of carriers are accepted by the airline in this case. That way you will also know if your dog is the type which can stay in the cabin.

The airline is not the only important thing to consider though. Your pet’s comfort comes into play quite a lot. Above all, your dog has got to be comfortable and safe in his carrier. There needs to be room for him to move around and he cannot be too crowded. You do not want to make this an unpleasant experience for him.

There are all kinds of Airline Approved dogs carrier. You simply need to know what your airline expects and what will make your dog comfortable. Taking the time to find out long before your trip is thus extremely necessary.

A vet can help a broken leg

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Sometimes a pet can fall and break a limb in just the same way that human being can. Something like this can be done from falling down the stairs to a simple fall in the garden. But what can you do when this actually happens when you are not with a private animal hospital? The answer is really not much and this is why they are so essential for your pet to be a member of.

One of the plus sides to actually being a member of one of these animal surgery places is that if something worse happens like your animal happens to have its leg needed to be removed they actually have blood transfusions available for pets now so they will not lose any blood if they are hit by a car or something like that and have to have a limb removed.

Of course there are other types of animals that have been known to have their limbs removed and carry on as normal other than the more common cat and dog cases. Wheelie the tortoise is perhapsa good example of this as she has to have three of her limbs removed and was then fitted with a set of wheels. Apparently since this has been fitted she has started to mate proving that vets really can do their job well in cases like this.

A cast is a lot better than putting the animal down surely which is why going to a vet when your animal starts to limp could be just a bit of old age arthritis or something more sinister like bone cancer. Bone cancer is a very painful thing for a dog or other animal to have and if you suspect something it is far better to have it amputated than to make the animal go through a lot of pain.

So if it’s a broken leg or even a heart problem a vet will either treat it with a cast or using pet’s cardiology and make your pet feel that much better!

Dog Bed - A Great Present For Your Dog To Help Them Sleep

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

When you own a dog, you need to ensure that they have all possible comforts and that their needs are met. Having a nice and comfortable place to rest and sleep, such as a dog beds, is absolutely needed, especially if your dog cherishes his resting time a lot. A dog bed comes in several different shapes and sizes, but before choosing one you should do a little research.

It is really important to find a dog bed both you and your dog can live with. A bed should be comfortable and aesthetically pleasing - especially if it will stay inside the house all the time. A good bed should also be easy to clean and move. Whether the bed is a simple mat or a cushion, you need to make sure that it has a removable cover that can get into a washing machine. Always remember that safety, health and convenience issues are equally important to you and your dog.

Some dogs tend to dig and chew on their beds before lying down and sleeping. This means that you need to buy something that can withstand abuse, wear and tear. The material used in a bed should be of a tough fabric, such as canvas or cordura, because they can endure claws and teeth bites.

Once you have the measurements, you should check how the dog prefers sleeping. Some dogs tend to curl up while others tend to stretch along the bed. This will give you a rough idea on the shape you should opt for; there are round, rectangular and square bedding for dogs, although the shape depends on the size and type as well.

Some pet owners are not aware of the fact that dogs and pets in general might be affected by the type of material used. When choosing a dog bed you should always check if the materials used are in accordance with the sanitary standards for pets. Choosing a material that is bacteria resisting and doesn’t enhance shedding is absolutely mandatory. You should also check on the filling materials of the bed, because dogs like chewing and some materials might harm them when swallowed.

A soft and spacious bed is always a great idea; most dogs would be absolutely enthusiastic about a lounging bed. Most dogs prefer higher sides as well; they make them feel more protected and safe.

Once you decide on the basic elements, you need to consider a few more things. First of all you need to define whether the bed will be used outside the house or if it will travel with you, in case of trips. Some dog beds are quite easy to move and fold for portability. If your dog is not travelling, you can buy a sturdier bed, such as a sofa bed. If you will move the bed outside, in the garden or balcony, you need to make sure that it is water proof and warm enough. Your dog doesn’t like being wet, especially in winter.

After all you need to make your small friend feel safe and secure. You can always buy a bed that offers you the chance to write the dog’s name on it. Your dog might not notice it, but it’s a funny and cute addition. Comfort and style should be combined in dog bed as well, so why not opt for something that can please both you and your dog.

Discount Dog Beds - Helping Your Dog Sleep In Peace

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

In today’s world, we have incorporated the dog into being a part of our family and include them in every aspect of our life. This includes them sitting with us while we watch a movie or our favorite show. The drawback to this is that when the pet leaves their hair remains. So how does a person fix this problem? You can always look into one of the different types of Discount dog beds.

First things first we need to decide what exactly the needs of your dog is and while we are doing this we also need to keep size in mind. A dog that is too big for a bed will not sleep on it. While a small dog will get lost on a huge bed.

The people who make pet products have noticed this increase for the need to acquire places for your pet to sleep and have come out with several styles that are complementary to whatever your design style might be. Beds for dogs just like for humans come in a range of colors and designs to choose what fits your room best.

After you have finally decided that you are tired of cleaning up after your pet, it is time to decide on what type you want. Some things that you want to keep in mind are the type of fabric, thickness, the color and most importantly the size.

With so many choices out there as far as Discount dog beds, it is confusing as to which type to get for your pet. If you want your pet to have a nice padded place to sleep then a cuddler bed would be right for you. For a slightly less padded choice you can choose from a pillow, which is briefly, is a large cushion. This provides a place for your dog to sleep comfortably.

The next thing to consider is color, the place he sleeps needs to be comforting to look at for you, as it is comfortable for the dog to sleep on. There are about as many colors to choose from as you can imagine. Colors range from the standard to custom colors to match your furniture. Take your time and choose the right color.

Make sure that the cover can be taken off and cleaned. This bed will get very dirty and you will need a way to clean it. Also, check to see if there are any special instructions concerning cleaning the cover. You will also want to look at the area that you are planning to put the bed. The first reason is to see if it will fit. In addition, you want to see if it will match the other furniture in your room.

The last thing to keep in mind is size. A Great Dane cannot and will not sleep on a little square bed with half of his body hanging off the bed. While you do not want to buy a giant beds for dogs that, your terrier gets lost trying to get off. The best bet is before you buy your bed for Fido let your pet try before you buy there at the store. Many pet stores will let you bring your pet with you so you can both make this choice. After all, you are making your dog a part of your family and most of the other family members get a choice in their furniture why not your dog as well.

Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer Can Help You Stop Your Dog Jumping

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Most dogs jump on you because they are trying to show you how happy and excited they are to see you. While this can be adorable in small puppy, it might turn up to be a problem when your dog grows into a 50-pound animal. Here are some secrets of a professional dog trainer that will help you solve your dog jumping problem.

What can you do about dog jumping?

There are, of course, many methods for stopping dog jumping. I will describe 3 methods that I think work really well and don’t rely on using violence. It would be best if you choose one method to work with, so your dog doesn’t get confused. If this method doesn’t work for some reason, you can still start again with another one.

Whatever you do, you need to be consistent. If you decide you don’t want your dog jumping on people, he should never be encouraged to jump on you or anybody else. Regardless the situation, you should never allow jumping.

Method No. 1 – Ignoring undesired behavior

First secret of a professional dog trainer is ignoring undesired behavior. When you get home and your dog starts jumping on you, turn away and ignore him. Never use force or yelling. Simply don’t give him any attention.

When you are turned away from him and your dog is jumping all over your legs (or even back if he is big enough), try to remain still. If he comes in front of you and starts jumping again, repeat the process – turn away and ignore him.

After he eventually calms down, sits or stands still, praise him, cuddle him, and give him a reward. If he starts jumping again, ignore him until he is acting the way you want him to.

This approach relies on the fact that dog will stop repeating a behavior that is not rewarded. It works well, but requires some time and patience.

Method No.2 – Holding paws

When you are following this method, you train your dog not to jump by doing something that he finds uncomfortable. When he jumps on you, catch his paws and hold them for a couple of moments. When he tries to pull away, let him. Don’t hold his paws longer than necessary or squeeze them too hard. You don’t want to cause him pain or scare him. All you want to achieve with this method is that he connects jumping on people with something unpleasant.

If you do this every time he jumps on you, he will soon stop jumping. Now all you need to do is affirm his good behavior. Each time his paws (all 4 of them) are on the ground, act happy and reward your dog for good behavior. Jumping will be gone in no time.

Method No. 3 – The ‘Sit’ command

This method is really only suitable for those dogs that already know and obey the ‘Sit’ command. This command is essential for any obedience training. When your dog jumps on you, give him the ‘Sit’ command. This way you are able to skip one step in training – you don’t have to tell your dog what not to do, only command him what you want him to do.

To recap – every time your dog starts jumping, say ‘Sit’. When he obeys, reward the behavior with a food snack or praise. After a while, your dog will learn to greet you sitting down. Obviously, the method in question requires that your dog knows ‘Sit’.

Conclusion

If you want to stop your dog from jumping, there are several ways you can achieve that. We have described 3 dog training secrets. Which method you use is up to your personal preferences and the character of your dog. It is important to be consistent in your training and never reward jumping. This way your dog will know what kind of behavior is expected of him and you will not have to worry about your dog jumping on you or other people.

Pet Breeders Or The Local Pet Store?

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Has your son or daughter been worrying you asking for a pet? Any person who has gone through the same situation of finding a pet for their family will know that buying a new pet can be quite expensive. Free pets are not possible to find nowadays and if you are to keep your children happy, you’d most probably have to buy a pet even if it’s expensive.

Buying a pet from pet breeders can be quite expensive as some quote high prices for even the smallest dog or cat. Did you know that Golden Retrievers if bought from pet breeders could cost up to $800? Rare exotic types of pets bought from pet breeders would be more expensive.

Many pets you see in pet shops come from different pet breeders. They are the ones who make it their daily job to breed certain types of pets and sell them to pet shops. You may wonder why some pets are expensive and some are not. This could be because some pet breeders breed only one kind of pet. When the pet breeders specialize in just one or two types of pet breeds, their prices obviously would be in a higher range.

Before buying a pet, it is good to do some research on it. Where do you think the pet came from? What is its lineage? Does it have any illness that you should know about? These questions could be asked from the pet breeders as they are the people who’d have all the answers.

There are some pet breeders who breed their pets in pet mills. Such places are where pets are ill-treated. Would you want to own a pet coming from such a place? Obviously not. Make sure the pet breeders are attentive to the pets and also someone who loves animals and not trying to make money out of them.

Being in contact directly with the pet breeders will give you a better idea about the pet you are planning on buying. It will also give you an idea about their health conditions, etc.
