Wondering which pet to buy?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Have you recently been thinking of buying a pet for the home? Well what is the best to have and why?

You need to consider the kids, they are vital to getting a pet. It is best not to get a pet if you have kids on the way as sometimes the animal can get jealous of the attention it has lost and the child has gained so if this is the case wait until your child has been born amd is perhaps a tad older.

A dog could be a very good choice for a family. If you are thinking of getting a dog then it would certainly be wise to get one of the bigger breeds like a Golden Retriever or German Shepherd as they are not only very friendly, family dogs they will also help to guard the home when you are out or asleep as their barks can ward of intruders. Be careful as in the case of a German Shepherd they are not very friendly towards anyone outside of the immediate family but get used to any guests you have so do not worry they are not as horrible as they sound or look in those police videos you see.

Of course if you are not a big family or do not like the big breeds of dog simply buy a smaller breed.

If you do not like dogs then maybe a cat is what you need. They are not really the best animal to have for families with young children as they are really only interested in themselves and have little time for playing.

There are hundreds of pets to choose from so if you do not like the suggestions so far how about something like a rabbit, hamster or even a goldfish would be better for you. They can be surprisingly good company to have.

Of course you do not want to forget the care that the pet will need once you have it. Join an animal hospital so that the animal surgery within it can help your pet if it has an accident or suffers from health problems. Some of these can even do pet’s cardiology which can even involve fitting a pacemaker into your pet.

History of Sinus and Nasal Irrigation…

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Knowing the history of nasal and sinus irrigation can ease any worries you may have about trying the process. Understanding the process itself can also make it simpler to try out this method. It can be helpful in a many ways. It can make you feel much better on a day to day basis. It can also make specific health problems feel better, if not go away entirely. When researching a nasal irrigation system, this information could prove valuable.

The history of this process dates back several millennia. It was used in the yoga practices in old Indian traditions. At the time, it was better known as jala neti, which is just another term for nasal sinus irrigation. Also at the time, the procedure was performed with a small pot which is today known as the neti pot. It looks something like a gravy boat, something like the lamps seen in Aladdin and Arabian nights.

During the volatile 1970s, yoga was widely introduced into the United States. With it came the introduction of the neti pot and, to a higher extent, nasal irrigation. This process is also known as nasal lavage, among other terms. No longer just a tool for yogic meditation, it is now a widespread practice.

For instance, you can find neti pots and other tools used in nasal sinus irrigation in some very mainstream and easily available stores these days. Not so long ago, they were only available in very select outfits, some of them available only in India.

A more modern version of the Neti Pot is the hydro pulse.

It has been said that nasal sinus irrigation gained its current popularity due to an “appearance” on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show. A doctor performed the neti pot procedure on a guest, with evidently great success. Sales for the various tools used in this process spiked after that.

Some people use neti pots to introduce the salt water into their nasal cavities. Others use small syringes or a variety of other bottles and tools.

Benefit your pet with a vet!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

So you’ve got a pet or are about to get a pet. How on earth are you going to help it if it falls ill or breaks a limb? Sometimes putting the poor pet down could be totally unnecessary simply because a vet could actually save its life and add years to its life. There are now so many new things that are available for pets that would have been laughed at twenty years ago if you had suggested doing them. Newer ways to operate on them have come into use ranging from the simple limb repair to the more skilled pets cardiology which believe it or not can even include fitting a pacemaker into your cat or dog which simply put just goes to show how far technology has come.

An animal surgery could help your pet on any of the 365 days of the year, as many have emergency clinics that you can pop into whenever you need to as well as, some having numbers that you can ring to talk to a specialist whenever you think something may be wrong with your pet, and these numbers will actually have a person who understands veterinary and can help as opposed to someone who has no idea what is wrong with your pet and is simply on the line to assure you that everything is ok.

If something bad happens to your loved pet and sadly it has to be put down they will not simply do it and ask for you to leave straight away. They understand that a pet is actually a member of the family so will allow you to stay on and say goodbye to your pet and help to arrange the right disposal for you.

There are some as well that offer blood transfusion so when something serious like a road traffic accident happens your pet will be able to gain back any lost blood.

So there are many ways that an animal hospital can actually benefit your pet so it is worth considering joining one now so if something bad does happen you have someone there to help.

A Kitten or a Cat How to Adopt a New Pet

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Whenever most people make the decision to adopt a new pet, they tend to gravitate toward the little ones.  These baby dogs and cats known as puppies and kittens put smiles on the faces of everyone.  Just remember that owning an adult cat has some advantages over the baby kitten.  How should you decide?  Here are some things to consider.

A new pet kitten is cute.  No one can deny this fact.  Kittens play, romp around, and pounce with an exaggerated cuteness that hardly anyone can resist.  However, a kitten may not be the best choice for your household.

If you adopt a new pet and choose a kitten, then you will need to be prepared for quite a bit of work.  The kitten will need to be litter box trained.  Training usually goes smoothly, but it does mean that you may have to deal with cat urine spraying.  Kittens will also need to be taught what they can play with and what is off-limits.

When you adopt this new kitten you will need to baby proof your home, making sure that it does not have easy access to electrical cords and other dangerous objects that felines will gravitate toward.

Adopting a new kitten

Kittens are filled with boundless energy, and this can be a reason to adopt one, but it could also be a reason to veer away. If you will have the time to spend with kitten, playing and petting, then certainly adopt the little fellow.

However a new pet kitten is not a good choice for people with small amounts of free time.  They need play time, and they definitely need human interaction to develop good social cat behavior.

When you adopt a new pet take the age of children in the home into consideration. If you have very small children then a kitten might not be right for your home. Kittens can be injured by small children that may not be capable of playing with them gently.

A grown cat can offer a bypass on much of the stress that comes along with raising and training a kitten.  Most adult cats are litter trained already so this will be one less thing to do when you move them into your home.

Even though an adult cat may not have the cute factor they are still affectionate and playful.  At the same time, a cat is not as dependent upon attention from their owner.  Cats enjoy their private time too.

Getting a full grown cat

One very large problem that can arise when adopting a grown cat is that you will not know its background.  Animals that have been neglected or abused may have behavioral issues that can pose difficult hurdles in your relationship. Usually, these problems can be overcome with some attention, patience, and reading some facts about cats.

When you adopt a new pet cat or a kitten, consider the animal’s personality and the amount of attention and training you will need to devote to your new pet.  There are definite advantages to either choice, but the ultimate decision will hinge on which will work best in your home environment.  Beware of the kittens weapons of mass cuteness and do not base your decision on cute.

Improving Your Oral Health With A Natural Sugar…

Monday, July 27th, 2009

bleeding gums

People in the United States have a problem with their teeth. We are constantly on the lookout for ways to make sure our teeth say healthy. The link between Xylitol and gum disease is thus of immense interest. You see, by “link” we do not mean Xylitol causes dental disease. Rather, we mean that it might be able to help prevent it.

One of the main reasons people in the United States are so prone to dental disease and tooth decay is partly due to our rampant intake of sugar. We eat too much of it. An excess of sugar can have a weakening effect on the immune system. In turn, that makes the environment in your mouth very acidic. Sugar can cause the bacteria we all have in our mouths to grow out of control.

Bacteria that eat sugar, produce toxins that are acidic. It could strip the enamel on your teeth of the minerals it needs. This can cause very weak teeth, which makes them even more susceptible to disease. Another tool that you may find useful is an ozone generator. It can be used to create an oxygenated mouthwash that could carry great power.

That is where Xylitol may come in handy. It is said to actually not do all of the awful things sugar can do to your teeth. It is not fermentable. Instead, it restores the balance in your mouth, of acid versus alkaline. Bacteria do not like an alkaline environment.

It is possible to use Xylitol before going to sleep. You see, Xylitol can stay on your teeth all through the night. Doing so on a consistent basis might help to stop your teeth from decaying. It may even help cavities from becoming more sensitive. Don’t forget the power of oral irrigators. Every little bit of extra help is valuable!

Xylitol and Your Health…

Friday, July 24th, 2009

One of the amazing hidden ’secrets’ of this century is xylitol. It is truly astonishing on two points. This five carbon sugar can help to prevent both tooth decay and gingival disease because the bacteria that eat it cannot utilize xylitol as they can glucose (six carbon table sugar).

The second fact to know about xylitol is that it has been both well known in one country and almost unheard of in many other countries at the same time. This astounds me because it demonstrates the limited nature of our human awareness very clearly.

Let us take a closer look. Xylitol has been used and well documented to reduce the incidence of dental disease in Finland for over five decades now.  Yet here in the United States and many other countries you will hardly hear of a dentist that promotes it. There may be a few, but they are not many.

How can something as beneficial as xylitol, in today’s world, be so unknown to most people despite the fact that Finlanders have been using it since the second world war when regular sugar became scarce.  Later, the dentists and doctors of Finland discovered that their levels of dental health improved due to the use of xylitol as a substitue for sugar. Another item worthy of renewed discovery is the
oral irrigator.

Xylitol has 1/3 the calories of an equivalent amount of table sugar. It does not promote tooth decay or the growth of bacteria that cause gum disease or bad breath. It does not require insulin to be metabolized and therefore is of special interest to diabetics.

Few things in this world are perfect and xylitol does have some drawbacks. Pets should really not be given xylitol. While a human being has a special metabolic pathway to digest xylitol, many pets do not. Therefore it can be harmful to pets and can even kill them.

You can learn more about xylitol at Xylitol.org. There is plenty of research and information about xylitol there. Ora-md is different in that it is an essential oil blend for helping to fight dental diseases.

We tend to think that if something is good, that everyone should know about it.  Yet, as this example shows, that is not always the case. There are so many things we still do not know.  Perhaps we should resolve to reach further beyond our limited awareness and discover the truth of this world and the universe that is around us.

A vet can help a broken leg

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Sometimes a pet can fall and break a limb in just the same way that human being can. Something like this can be done from falling down the stairs to a simple fall in the garden. But what can you do when this actually happens when you are not with a private animal hospital? The answer is really not much and this is why they are so essential for your pet to be a member of.

One of the plus sides to actually being a member of one of these animal surgery places is that if something worse happens like your animal happens to have its leg needed to be removed they actually have blood transfusions available for pets now so they will not lose any blood if they are hit by a car or something like that and have to have a limb removed.

Of course there are other types of animals that have been known to have their limbs removed and carry on as normal other than the more common cat and dog cases. Wheelie the tortoise is perhapsa good example of this as she has to have three of her limbs removed and was then fitted with a set of wheels. Apparently since this has been fitted she has started to mate proving that vets really can do their job well in cases like this.

A cast is a lot better than putting the animal down surely which is why going to a vet when your animal starts to limp could be just a bit of old age arthritis or something more sinister like bone cancer. Bone cancer is a very painful thing for a dog or other animal to have and if you suspect something it is far better to have it amputated than to make the animal go through a lot of pain.

So if it’s a broken leg or even a heart problem a vet will either treat it with a cast or using pet’s cardiology and make your pet feel that much better!

Wodent Wheel: the Safest Pet Exercise Wheel

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

In today’s market, you can find many modern running wheels for small animals. The Wodent Wheel by Transoniq is one of the best.

First, a little history of pet wheels. As recent as 15 years ago, the only pet running wheels you could find had big metal horizontal bars as the running surface. The wheel had a stand so it sat in the cage. Each side of the wheel had a big strip of metal which the stand went through.

Over time, people realized these types of wheels had two major safety issues.

  1. As your animal ran, his feet could easily become caught in the horizontal spokes of the wheel.
  2. Your pet could easily get caught between the bar of the stand and the cross bars as the wheel rotated. This was very dangerous, not only for animals with long tails, but also for multiple animals using the wheel at the same time. If one animal tried to get in the wheel while another was making it rotate, it could get pinched.

Some pet wheel companies replaced the bars of the running surface with a mesh, which addressed the first problem. Small feel won’t slip through the small mesh. In stores today, this is the most common type of wheel you’ll come across.

But it wasn’t until the mid 90s that people started addressing the second problem. And that’s how in 1995, the Wodent Wheel came to be. The founder, Eric Geislinger, wanted to create a running wheel that was safe for his pet rats. That’s why Eric created a wheel whose stand attaches to the wheel on its closed end. Picture a hat box with no lid. Since the stand is attached to the wall of the wheel, there is absolutely no way for a pet to get caught between the stand and the wheel.

And Eric went even further in his design. He covered the open side of the wheel with a lid that has circular openings, which are appealing to the wall-hugging instincts of many small animals. Small pets love the feeling of crawling into enclosed places. They also feel safer as they run.

My own pets love the design of their Wodent Wheel so much, they sometimes sleep in it.

From that time on, other exercise wheel designs have come forward with the safety of your pet in mind. But the Wodent Wheel was the original pet wheel designed for maximum safety. In fact, The Wodent Wheel is the only exercise wheel ever recommended and approved by the ASPCA during their Seal of Approval program (1999-2006).

The Wodent Wheel has 3 different sizes to accommodate a wide variety of pets:

The Wodent Junior is for small animals such as hamsters
The Wodent Senior is for medium-sized pets such as sugar gliders and large hamsters
Wodent Wobust for rats, hedgehogs and other large pets

You can sometimes find them at pet stores, or you can order the Wodent Wheel from wodentwheeldirect.com.

Pet Breeders Or The Local Pet Store?

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Has your son or daughter been worrying you asking for a pet? Any person who has gone through the same situation of finding a pet for their family will know that buying a new pet can be quite expensive. Free pets are not possible to find nowadays and if you are to keep your children happy, you’d most probably have to buy a pet even if it’s expensive.

Buying a pet from pet breeders can be quite expensive as some quote high prices for even the smallest dog or cat. Did you know that Golden Retrievers if bought from pet breeders could cost up to $800? Rare exotic types of pets bought from pet breeders would be more expensive.

Many pets you see in pet shops come from different pet breeders. They are the ones who make it their daily job to breed certain types of pets and sell them to pet shops. You may wonder why some pets are expensive and some are not. This could be because some pet breeders breed only one kind of pet. When the pet breeders specialize in just one or two types of pet breeds, their prices obviously would be in a higher range.

Before buying a pet, it is good to do some research on it. Where do you think the pet came from? What is its lineage? Does it have any illness that you should know about? These questions could be asked from the pet breeders as they are the people who’d have all the answers.

There are some pet breeders who breed their pets in pet mills. Such places are where pets are ill-treated. Would you want to own a pet coming from such a place? Obviously not. Make sure the pet breeders are attentive to the pets and also someone who loves animals and not trying to make money out of them.

Being in contact directly with the pet breeders will give you a better idea about the pet you are planning on buying. It will also give you an idea about their health conditions, etc.
